ˈdī(ə)rē – noun; a book in which one keeps a daily record of events and experiences.

I have two confessions to make.

First, I have always been horrible with keeping a diary.

Even as a child, I could never keep up with a journal for more than a few days unless I was cataloging something specific, like the declining health of my late dog, Fiori. But thoughts and emotions? Not so much. It’s not that I judge the practice, it just becomes something of a chore.

Turns out, blogs are a lot like diaries.

I mean, of course I knew the similarities going into it. But I thought having a specific topic would help keep me focused on weekly installments. Only, as I said in a previous post, this blog is supposedly a “Personal Journey into Professional Voice Acting”. Well, I hate to break it to you but it’s not all that exciting. A lot of it is Marketing/Networking and waiting. There is an occasional audition – which I am never allowed to share publicly. So what is there really to write about?

I stated before that I was turning this blog into more of an “advice column” but I’m afraid I’m not really sure what there is to say that I haven’t already covered. Perhaps I shouldn’t have written such broad posts in the past. But I imagine those who want to get into voice over don’t want to sift through 50 posts for the answers to common questions; I know I wouldn’t!

More and more, I find I enjoy the art of writing itself, not the “let me tell you how it is” portion of the blog.

Which brings me to my second confession – I love to research things.

You know that phenomenon of falling into a “Google Hole” where you start off asking how cheese is made and two hours later end up in the bowels of a 1920’s Mafia conspiracy? That’s sort of my hobby.

I have always enjoyed making connections; like 7 degrees of Kevin Bacon but with more than just Bacon. For example, a short one off the top of my head would be starting with Yuffie from the game Final Fantasy VII. She was voiced by both Mae Whitman and Christy Carlson Romano. Mae also voices Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender as well as April O’Neil in the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle TV series. Christy also voiced Kim Possible, from the series with the same title. Rufus, a character from Kim Possible was voiced by Nancy Cartwright, the voice actor for Bart Simpson. Well, Rob Paulsen voiced Donatello in that 2012 TMNT and he is also the voice of Yakko from Animaniacs. Nancy Cartwright was announced to voice Mindy in the 2020 revival of Animaniacs. See? Fun full-circle of connections for no reason! (Side note – I’ve also cosplayed both Yuffie (FFVII) and Dot (Animaniacs) ).

But I also enjoy learning new things (and promptly forgetting them if I don’t put them to use, unfortunately). My Kolbe A Index is 9-5-3-3 with 9 representing “Fact Finder”. (5 = Follow Thru, 3 = Quick Start, 3 = Implementor). In other words, I “Strategize, Maintain, Stabilize, & Envision”.

I never considered myself to be all that strategic; I usually quickly gather an idea and then jump right in. However, this analysis is designed to show your “ideal” work environment. If I were left to my own devices, this is how I would proceed.

And to that, I concur. I am always over-thinking, second guessing, and double checking. Take voice over for example – by now I must have clocked upwards of 100 hrs on taking classes & seminars, reading books/articles and I still am not confident I can even get off the ground. That probably has to do with other things like low self-esteem and anxiety but my point is – I spend most of my time learning and researching than I do acting upon.

I’m not about to psycho-analyze myself. First, I’m not qualified and second, I doubt anyone would find that interesting to read. I just needed to “defend” my stats because most people are surprised when I tell them.

For other fun personality facts:

  1. Myers Briggs classifies me as an ENFJ “The Protagonist”

  2. Horoscope: Virgo

  3. Chinese Zodiac: Fire Tiger

  4. Hogwarts House: Slytherin

I personally find all of this fascinating as I do believe that while everyone is unique there are only a certain set of ‘personality types’. However, I digress from my main point….

I’m not sure I can keep up with this blog being simply a Voice Over “How To” or “What Not To Do”. Certainly, I will try to keep it somewhat relating to that for now (although I have other creative thoughts in my head I might like to explore) but this blog will contain a variety of thoughts. At times, I will tell you about my personal experiences or what’s going on with my career. Other times, it will be advice or “PSA’s” that I feel I am capable of writing. Other times, it may just be interesting tidbits that can somehow relate to voice over.

I hope this is acceptable to whomever may come across this blog. I may start another blog that is more personal/hobby-centric or I may incorporate that into this blog and hope for the best! Either way, I will write what interests me first and hope that you find interest in it as well.

Thanks for Reading!
